Jacob.. look at the US sub fleet.. what is can deploy and what that deployment can eradicate.. no one on the planet can touch the US in killing power.. it is very simple.. sadly the US has sacrificed much for that ultimate power.. to be that last man standing... which is not worth much when one really thinks about it... No other nation can do more than I'll hit you back.. and same goes for China.. Conventional war ? sure different story.. but that is not what makes superpower today.. I think the 'imperial' borders of China are already set.. the only one missing on the scene is Taiwan.. and that is a matter of honour mostly... and frankly should be viewed properly as a war between the states :O)
