"The historical verdict is unassailable: because of the requisite technical and infrastructural imperatives and because of numerous (and often entirely unforeseen) socio-economic adjustments, energy transitions in large economies and on a global scale are inherently protracted affairs."

Ah - he is talking about tau!

RE: Moore’s Curse and the Great Energy Delusion

I attended a conference where Smil basically presented his paper as a talk. The guy was wonderful. Knows his stuff inside and out. I highly recommend reading the entire article if you didn't already. He really savored savaging Al Gore.

The bottom line is that there is a mountain of technical inertia. Then we can talk about the capital costs. Then we can talk about the permitting delays.

I am aware of the significant environmental degradation in the sand box. I don't find it very appealing. I feel confident in stating there there will be war and famine if the oil is cut off abruptly. I could justify crapping up a portion of Canada if we were long term committed to an alternative energy - if it exists. Windmills isn't it.

Some say that the best form of government is a benevolent dictator. I drive an old Mercedes diesel. Weighs about 4K pounds and gets 35 mpg on the highway. Totally solid. The other day I parked next to one of the new Mercedes SmartCars. I walked around the SmartCar about three times, and admired it greatly. I bet it weighs about 1500 pounds - if that much. I would like to have one - if all the cars like the one I drive were made unlawful. So if we had a benevolent dictator who one day wrote an executive order forbidding any vehicles on the road weighing more than say 1,000 pounds during rush hour, and forbade tractor trailers moving at times other than midnight to 6:00 AM, and forbid tractor trailers hauling for more than 100 miles (basically forcing 90% reliance on rail) then we might get somewhere. That will only happen when the sand box is used up and the famine well advanced.
