Disk signature. . .

Using DiskPart: howtohaven.com

Using Acronis: forum.acronis.com

Do not confuse the Disk Signature with the Volume ID.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. When you install a disk that is totally empty, Windows requires that the disk be initialized before it can be used. The initialization wizard creates the Disk Signature.

P.P.S. In Windows XP, a source of massive confusion plagues the BOOT.INI file contents. The disk numbers refer to the order the disks are presented by the BIOS, beginning at 0. The partition numbers begin from 1. And here's the bit of information that's rarely provided: partition numbers refer to the partition's data location in the partition table, and NOT THE PARTITION'S ACTUAL LOCATION ON THE DISK!
