Regarding Dell's patents:

There aren't any I know of pertaining to the Operations
side of things. Most are design or utility patents. Utility
patents such as methods for predicting hard drive failures or
improved interrupt handling... lot's of electrical stuff like
that.

There have been many design patents granted for Dell's industry leading chassis design (sorry Compaq, Dell wins hands down in this
department). Dell's design efforts are squarely focused
on the corporate need for speed and simplicity of servicability
not the fancy colorful high-tech shiny plastic crapola us
consumers crave.

Dell has substantially built up it's patent portfolio over the
past several years. This has helped them especially with
TI and IBM in cross-licensing agreements. They pay considerably
less in royalties than other companies with less barganing power to use certain PC related technologies.
