People demand and need a viable currency, and only a currency backed by something will ever be accepted again, after the monster failure of the free floating fiat currency experiment of the last 40 to 80 years depending on how you measure it. As is usually the case, the Govt is bankrupt and doesn't have anything to back a new currency so they have to resort to stealing backing from the masses, whatever they choose it to be. Communists take all private property. FDR took Gold. What's next? Silver? Land? Gold again?
