Here might be a bit of a different take. Is it all Dollar related,or money going WS and Hedgies? FOOD FOR THOUGHT…the week of October 8-12, 2007 the DJX hit an all-time high of 14,198. Sentiment on Wall Street was sky-high. During the same week, Crude Oil traded $84 a barrel. In July 2008, Crude Oil topped out at $147.00 a barrel. In July 2008, the DJX was 21.8% lower at 11,100. Fast-forward three years to March 2011. Sentiment on Wall Street is sky-high again. Crude Oil on Friday traded as high as $104.94. DJX finished on Friday at 12,169. This was 1.79% below the February 18, 2011 closing high of 12,391. Hmmmmmmmm. And if you want to do some deep thinking this weekend, think about this. 1. Unemployment is almost double what it was in October 2007. 2. If you still have a job, your salary has either remained the same or been cut. 3. So…...you wake up every day for the past four years and your paycheck has been the same or lower. Now look at what the prices of food and energy have done since October 2007. OUCH Every single commodity is significantly higher than it was four years ago. 4. Cotton is the biggest gainer on the board ahead 236.5%. Most of that gain has come over the past six months and has not yet been reflected in the price of clothing. It soon will be time to pull out the old clothes and for the kids…the hand-me-downs. It could also be time to buy the stock of the #1 sewing machine maker; Singer. It will be a rough Christmas Season for the retailers. 5. Lastly…don’t blame it on the Dollar which is down a mere 5.5% in four years.
