Just because they are obscenely profitable today it does not mean they will be similarly profitable 2 years from now. In fact, if the iPhone loses its luster (and we are seeing that starting to happen) and have to start competing in price with all the rest of the manufacturers, then you can wave most of those fat margins and fat profits goodbye.

Some of those manufacturers sell phones with the free Android operating system.

Slight correction. Android is not free to HTC, they pay a licensing fee to Microsoft to use Android. HTC quite possibly will be paying Apple a licensing fee to use Android. Motorola will very likely be paying a licensing fee to Microsoft to use Android.
