(Didn't you read any of the articles? BOTH automatic spending cuts and automatic tax increases would happen in the event that Congress failed utterly to deal with the deficit problem by passing legislation.)

Public pressure is necessary to move these politicians off of their normal special interest focus, and on to the long-term good of the nation.
