Sheriff With CAIR Ties Defends Muslims At Hearing (Baca, LA Co)

Judicial Watch March 10, 2011 judicialwatch.org

The only law enforcement official to testify at today’s congressional hearing on Muslim radicalization is tight with an Islamic group that raises money for Hamas and was a co-conspirator in a federal terror-finance trial.
Predictably, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca advocated on behalf of Muslims
at the highly-publicized hearing, conducted by the House Committee on Homeland Security. Not surprising considering Baca, elected to run the nation’s largest sheriff’s department, regularly attends fundraisers for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to meet the goals of his agency’s Muslim Community Affairs Division.
First elected in 1999, Baca joined forces with CAIR to stay on “positive terms” with the Muslim community after the 9/11 attacks. Never mind that the group was founded in 1994 by three Middle Eastern extremists (Omar Ahmad, Nihad Awad and Rafeeq Jaber) who ran the American propaganda wing of Hamas, known then as the Islamic Association for Palestine. CAIR has extensive links to foreign and domestic Islamists, was a co-conspirator in a federal terror-finance case involving the Hamas front group Holy Land Foundation and is largely funded by Islamic terrorist-supporting countries.
It may seem odd for a top U.S. law enforcement official to have such a cozy relationship with this sort of group. Then again Baca is also tight with L.A. poker clubs, though his department is responsible for enforcing gambling laws. The lucrative casinos make generous political contributions to the sheriff, shower him with expensive gifts and give handsomely to his youth charity.
Now back to the sheriff’s testimony at the Muslim radicalization hearing. The Homeland Security committee’s top Democrat (Mississippi’s Bennie Thompson) invited Baca to advocate on behalf of maligned Islamists worldwide and the sheriff stepped up to the plate. He assured that all terrorists are not Muslim and warned that radicalization is an issue that affects all groups regardless of religion.
Baca took the opportunity to “deliver very good news,” about the Muslim community in Los Angeles; that it’s an “active participant in the securing of our homeland.” Taxpayers in the sprawling county of about 10 million should also take note that to “further solidify international relationships,” members of the sheriff’s department have embarked on “professional diplomacy efforts” to Pakistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Jordan, Armenia, Russia and Morocco among others. Baca didn’t offer any examples of how the costly trips abroad have helped keep his county safe.
The good sheriff did take the opportunity to do a bit of cheerleading for President Obama,

who has conducted a series of aggressive Muslim outreach efforts since moving into the White House. “At this time in our history, with billions of dollars being spent on wars against terror, our nation should follow President Obama's example and serve as instruments of goodwill to Muslims throughout the world,” Baca said. Rah! Rah!
So much for the boisterous accusations from the politically-correct left that the hearing ( “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community's Response.” ) amounts to modern-day McCarthyism.

O’Keefe releases another NPR video

March 10, 2011
politico.com

Betsy Liley, the other NPR executive at the infamous video taped lunch with Ron Schiller at Café Milano, is the target of a second video released by James O’Keefe’s Project Vertas today.
The video shows Liley telling a member of the fake Muslim charity that NPR could, by accepting the proposed $5 million gift anonymously, shield the charity from a government audit of NPR's books.
“[The government has] audited our program, at times, and they have, I think as part of that, they have looked at our audited financials,” she tells the undercover activist by phone. “If you were concerned in any way about that, that’s one reason that you may want to be an anonymous donor. And we would certainly, if that was your interest, want to shield you from that.”

UPDATE: NPR released a statement condemning Liley’s statements in the video.

“The statement made by Betsy Liley in the audio tapes released today regarding the possibility of making an anonymous gift that would remain invisible to tax authorities is factually inaccurate and not reflective of NPR’s gift practices.
All donations – anonymous and named – are fully reported to the IRS. NPR complies with all financial, tax and disclosure regulations.”

Liley, who was caught on the initial videotape laughing at the suggestion that NPR was sometimes called National Palestinian Radio, was placed on administrative leave with Ron Schiller on Tuesday afternoon.

“Through unequivocal words and actions, NPR has renounced and condemned the secretly recorded statements of Ron Schiller and Betsy Liley. Mr. Schiller is no longer with NPR and Ms. Liley has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation of the matter,” the NPR statement continued.

“No stronger statement of disavowal and disapproval is possible. NPR will not be deterred from its news mission and will ultimately be judged by the millions and millions of listeners and readers who have come to rely on us every day.”
