ATI's 3D RAGE LT LCD Controller and TV-out Chips
Inside Samsung's New Mobile Computers to Enable High
Performance Multimedia Notebooks

3D RAGE LT win signals ATI's success in the mobile computing market

TORONTO, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- ATI Technologies Inc. (Toronto: ATY)
today announced its 3D and TV-out technology has been selected to provide
leading edge graphics, video acceleration and high-quality TV display for
Samsung mobile computers.
The win with Samsung, one of the top 10 notebook
suppliers in the world, marks ATI's move into the mobile computer market,
estimated by Mercury Research to total US$372 million for 1997(1).
The 3D RAGE(TM) LT chip adds LCD panel support, LVDS transmitters and
extensive power management to the industry-leading performance and features of
ATI's 3D RAGE II+ desktop graphics accelerator. This enables Samsung's
notebooks with industry-leading 3D, fast 2D and high-quality video
acceleration.
ATI's TV-out technology, the ImpacTV2(TM) chip permits notebooks to
display flicker-free images on conventional and large-screen TVs.
"ATI's 3D RAGE LT enables Samsung to be the first to market with the
desktop-style features the mobile market is now demanding in a multimedia
notebook," said Dr. B.R. Choi, director of the mobile R&D department, Samsung.
"ATI's TV-out technology will ensure notebook users can display on any TV set,
further expanding the utility of the mobile computer."
The combination of 3D RAGE LT features and ImpacTV2's high-quality
TV-out is creating new applications for mobile computers, including 3D
graphics for Internet and Intranet sites, video games, presentations, data
visualization and other emerging 3D business and entertainment applications.
In developing the 3D RAGE LT chip, ATI also created a solid infrastructure
of support for OEM customers in order to capitalize on the emerging market for
full-featured mobile computers. ATI supplies a design kit with reference
designs, sample boards, BIOS, drivers and international FAE (Field
Applications Engineering) support to enable OEMs to bring leading-edge
multimedia mobile computers to market quickly, and with low risk.
"The selection of ATI technology by Samsung is an indication that notebook
manufacturers see large demand for ATI's features and performance in the
mobile market," said KY Ho, President of ATI. "ATI is continuing to invest
heavily in product and resources for the mobile market, where we expect to be
a major player."

3D RAGE LT's multimedia support to help grow the mobile computing market
Support of multimedia expansions through industry standard PC Card Video
Port for applications such as video conferencing, receiving Internet and
Intranet broadcasts or decoding MPEG-2 in hardware makes 3D RAGE LT ideal for
multimedia notebooks and will help the mobile computer market grow at a more
rapid rate.

"The addition of 3D and the advanced functionality it will provide in
terms of 3D rendering, presentation creation and even portable gaming, will
see the notebook become the primary machine for a number of users," said Dean
McCarron, Principal, Mercury Research. "Expect to see 3D as a critical
feature in notebook computers by the end of 1997."
3D RAGE LT, ImpacTV2 ideal for high-end mobile computing performance 3D
RAGE LT's desk-top level 2D performance and 64-bit engine produce top Winmark
scores for mobile computers. Based on ATI's 3D RAGE II+ chip, which has
garnered 28 per cent of the 3D desktop controller market(a), the high
integration of the 3D RAGE LT results in a small-footprint and a power-
efficient graphics subsystem ideal for notebooks.
3D RAGE LT, which supports DVD playback and scaling with hardware assist,
adds a standard LCD interface and an LVDS high-speed panel interface capable
of supporting DSTN and TFT panels with resolutions up to 1280x1024 at 24bpp.
ATI's ImpacTV2 technology, an important factor in the selection of ATI
by Samsung, includes an extensive six-line flicker filter and text-enhancement
filters to produce crystal clear display of images and text on conventional
and large-screen TVs. Supporting NTSC and PAL television standards around the
world and with built-in Macrovision 7.01 support for playback of encrypted
DVD content on TV sets, 3D RAGE LT's performance combined with the multimedia
features of Samsung mobile computers paves the way for increasing use of the
notebook as a home entertainment device.
