I can deal with a stupid firefighter but not a stupid police officer.

What about the under-representation of Black doctors and nuclear physicists? Lower the graduation requirements to F like with the police test in Dayton?

Let's say I sell widgets currently priced at $100 each. The parts for these widgets come from countries in the Middle East. These parts come to the U.S. in large ships on a two-week voyage. They then go through a complex procedure to create widgets.

Suddenly there's revolt and unrest in the Middle East. The parts to make my widgets go up by 50 percent overnight. Thankfully my ships full of widget parts are safely at sea at the original price, so it's going to be two weeks before the more expensive parts make it to the American ports. Then they still have to be processed before they hit my warehouse. So how on earth could I justify raising the price of my widgets overnight? My customers would scream bloody murder and flee to my competitors!

So how is it that the price of gas can go up overnight (and even several times a day) when crude oil at last week's prices is still on its way to American refineries? The cost of converting that crude into gasoline isn't, to the best of my knowledge, affected by events in Libya.

I can understand that the price of gasoline will go up as the price of crude goes up. But seeing the price of gas and diesel skyrocket at the pump before the more expensive crude could possibly reach the U.S. refineries is ludicrous! Rather than looking to tap American oil reserves, our politicians should be investigating the ethics -- and even the legalities -- of Big Oil's pricing.
