You may want to look again. The poorest states in the country are California, Illinois, and Michigan. And among the 1/3 poorest, you would also include NY, NJ, Oregon, PA, RI. Above all these states you'll find Arkansas and even Oklahoma.

In fact, the poorest states in the country are also -- you guessed it -- BLUEST of the BLUE.
