A lot of schools have higher standards than the NCAA minimum for D1 athletes (GPA of 2.0 and combined SAT score of 1010).
They're mostly the schools you'd expect.

Most of the top US colleges are of the small liberal arts variety. They are usually D2 and D3. Of the larger top academic D1 schools, yes, not many are basketball (or sports in general) powerhouses. The Ivies (D1-A) are not even allowed to recruit.
