At least publicly, GS is preternaturally late to the party, but accurate.
I say 'publicly' because you never know what he giant squid is doing privately, esp. to its customers. If history is a guide, it might be privately shorting gold. If so, they will get burned.
GS is utterly untrustworthy. I'd rather rely on Bernanke's fiddling with the money supply, Obambi's increase in debt, objectively low interest rates, inflation much higher than reported, etc.
And, frankly, I think the GS call that gold will peak in 2012 because rates will go higher is not just stupid but idiotic. Those idiots presumably know nothing of Gibson's Paradox for the assumption is that real rates will rise. Nominal rates will indeed rise, but so will inflation, which they don't seriously consider.
Without an analysis of real rates that includes something credible concerning inflationary prospects which, thanks to oil, are horrendous, GS is pissing in the wind, probably setting up their customers or something else reeking of a sub rosa motivation.
