Mosel-Siemens DRAM venture opens 8-inch fab

November 10, 1997, Issue: 980 Section: Design

Hsinchu, Taiwan - ProMOS Technologies Inc., a joint venture of Mosel Vitelic and Siemens Semiconductors, has opened its 8-inch wafer fab here, allowing both partners to start production of 64-Mbit DRAMs in Southeast Asia.

ProMOS plans to hit full capacity by year's end, beginning with 20,000 8-inch wafer starts/month on 0.35-micron technology. Next year, ProMOS will convert to Siemens' 0.25-micron process technology for 64-Mbit and 256-Mbit DRAMs.

Siemens Semiconductors president and chief executive officer Ulrich Schumacher called the joint venture "an important step in the company's globalization strategy."
