Abuelita, a Samba school is a group that organizes the carnaval. They are the core of the celebrations.

The carnaval is a business now. A major Samba school has budget of BRL10 million or about USD6 million.

Money come from the tourism authority, sponsors (beer companies are major sponsors), share of ticket sales and TV rights.

Other revenue comes from activities the samba school raises. People buy the costumes. Rehearse a bit with a block (a block is a group of people with the same type of costumes that makes part of the year theme of the Samba school.

This people (ordinary people) who buy the costumes only want to have a nice time to tell people they were in the 'avenue' parade. Some high profile people who had been in the news the previous year. (Not exactly for the good reasons.) For instance a hooker in LA is caught in the act inside a car with Hugh Grant (that Brit actor). She is invited and paid to to be in the parade.

That because carnaval is time to mock the seriousness of society. And the music follows that too:

1991, January. Showdown in the desert as war was going to ravage after Kuwait invasion by Iraq.

Saddam, ai, Saddam esquece a bomba e deixa a guerra para amanhã

Translation:
Saddam, ai, Saddam, forget the bomb and leave this war for tomorrow.

1982 showdown in the South Atlantic. Argentina took by force the Falklands and the Brits came to rescue half a dozen sheep raisers. One carnival song was this: (translation)

The British frigate is coming. With that huge noise that allucinates me. Three hundred crafts of submarine type.

But while the guns shoot at you, Margareth Thatcher and Galtieri are elected again.

After seeing this year how it was, my wife and daughter wat next year to get into costumes and go into the parade.
