The government needs to learn to do more with less. They need to take a page from corporate America - lower costs, increase productivity & find sources of waste.
The taxpaying public should be demanding this; not having that old tired BS line that the only way the gov't can make ends meet is by raising taxes. Only ignorant fools believe that nonsense!

That tax increase was largely responsible for the balanced budgets.

bzzzzzzzzt...incorrect.

The increased tax revenues from the internet boom and corresponding stock market bubble is what helped to balance the budget.

But instead of recognizing that it was a bubble and that it necessarily must burst, both federal and state governments grew their spending and financial obligations such that when the bubble did burst, so did their revenue stream. Where businesses had to shrink their budgets and/or go bankrupt, the government workers still demanded high pay and excessive bennies.

The liberal policies of the 90s set up the financial disaster of the 2000s and their continued effect is being felt in the 2010s.

the only way out of this mess is to shrink the government. Time to start laying off state and federal workers throughout the country.
