Thanks. I printed out your answers and will go over my figures tomorrow. The margin page at savoystocks.com wasn't much use, but I'll look at the shorts page as well.

Question: if you have used margin for shorting and you get a margin call, will covering some of your short positions to close them out reduce your margin and hence satisfy the call? That's one of the questions which E*Trade ignored.
