The most common human response to facts that completely contradict a persons world view is to reject them. Least likely response is to attempt to revise world view. I'm sure I'm guilty of it...and it's led to more than my share of investment losses.

I heard an interview of Ron Paul once, and the interviewer asked him if the gold standard was such a great idea, how come we had incredible monetary instability while we used gold as a standard, including frequent and devastating deflationary periods. He couldn't grok the question, it was like the first Native Americans trying to comprehend the idea of a ship. He went quiet for a while.,then started repeating his now calcified canned response about how the government is printing, is broke, the federal reserve should be abolished, gold is the answer.

The idea didn't fit into his belief system, so his brain rejected that those historical facts could exist, and basically shut down.
