The water in most of the ocean today is "polluted"?

That's a lot of water. And a lot of pollution. You aren't exaggerating just a tad by any chance?

In some places, the environment IS getting better. LA air is WAY less polluted than it was in 1980. Still terrible, but much better. At the turn of the century in the age of coal, London's skies were sometimes black!

In another way, the environment is much worse. More species go extinct because of our numbers every year, yet we do NOTHING to limit our numbers. Which is the cause of environmental degradation, and many of our other problems, the root cause.

I guess you weren't around in the 50s and 60s. A river caught fire then, The Potomac river was dead, now it's a bass haven. One of the best fishing rivers on the east coast

How exactly is the environment better?

In developed countries air and water quality are better than they used to be. Not so much in the developing countries, right now they are building out their economy and a fairly rapid rate and polluting in the process, but as they become richer they will have more concern for the environment and more wealth to do something about it.
