LSI Logic Endorses Iomega's Clik! Drives and Disks for Digital Cameras

New Storage Technology and LSI Logic DCAM Digital Image Processor Target Expanding Consumer Market

MILPITAS, Calif., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic today announced its support for Iomega Corporation's [NYSE:IOM - news] new Clik!(TM) low-cost storage medium for use with digital cameras and other handheld personal electronic products. LSI Logic's DCAM(TM)-101 processor, a single-chip digital camera processing engine, can easily interface with Clik! to enhance digital cameras and provide low-cost digital storage for up to forty-near-35 mm quality images (megapixel) on each 40 MB Clik!, disk.

''Clik! drive and disks create a paradigm that is similar to but more convenient than film based photography,'' said Vernon Klein, product manager at LSI Logic. ''We believe Iomega's Clik! drive and disks complement LSI Logic's DCAM single-chip digital image processing engine in the development of new consumer digital camera products.''

Clik! drives are designed to be used as external storage for existing digital cameras, as well as internal storage devices. OEMs can build a miniature version of the Clik! drive into future digital cameras in order to provide internal storage of images and an unlimited storage capacity, while maintaining a low price point. Clik! disks are smaller than a credit card, will sell for an MSRP of $9.95 US and are projected to be available to consumers in the second half of 1998.

''LSI Logic's DCAM-101 will spur the development of the digital still camera market,'' said Michael Lundgren, general manager of Iomega's mobile storage division. ''The close integration of DCAM-101 and Clik! drive technology will let OEMs offer an easy-to-use, high-quality camera at a cost that will attract a large number of consumers to digital photography for everyday use.''

The DCAM-101 is an incredibly powerful single-chip image processing system capable of producing ultra-sharp images with resolutions of up to 4 million pixels. It contains all the major functions needed to capture an image from the CCD and then preview, compress, filter, store, transfer and display it. The DCAM-101 enables a camera user to take still pictures at a rate forty times faster than current digital cameras, making sequential action shots possible for the first time.

The device captures, compresses and stores 3.3 million pixels per second, (24bits/pixel, 4:2:2), supporting a maximum pixels resolution of 2K x 2K. This level of performance equates to capturing 11 fully compliant JPEG images per second to the camera's LCD display in preview mode. The DCAM-101 architecture is highly programmable and is well suited for virtually any consumer digital imaging system such as digital still cameras and multi-function peripherals that combine printing, scanning, fax, and copying capabilities. >>
