Why do you say so? just because PC prices are going down?

Don't forget, Compaq is the market leader in the high-margin server market. Compaq's margins have been increasing, not decreasing. They were about 23% a year ago and 27% in the third-quarter report.

Don't jump to conclusions.

With BTO program fully implented, inventory and cycle time reduced, and cost of revenue reduced, means higher profit margin, and cost of
components reduced, i.e CPU,Dram, Sram, connectors, cables, power supply, ...etc as a result of improvement in process technology and
devaluation of Korean Won, Tawanese Yen and Japanese Yen ( lot of wafers were processed in those countries), I did see the total cost of
system continued to be reduced and CPQ's profit margin will continue
to be improved. ACER has done some calculation that even with the PC
sold at $500, the box makers still make good profit.Pls do your own calculation before you make any comment on this thread !!!!

Joe,
I don't agree about margins being grossly impacted. Even though boxmaking is somewhat commoditized, marketing can keep the margins.

joel, let me tell you how cpq works...
the price decreases that cpq is doing now are already paid for with reserves they took in 3q97 profits.
so, they are free and barely even effect profits this qtr.
plus the inventory in dealers is down and they have dropped price protection from 60 to 15 days.

Go get some facts and come back to us....
YOu can have an opinion..I'm not challenging that...
but, you haven't called off one fact...you are just posting.
Cpq wouldn't be bragging all this much unless they had this qtr in the brag with overage
