COMMENTARY | One of the developments that really shows how health care reform is so dysfunctional is how many entities have acquired waivers from various requirements of the law. The latest to perhaps get a waiver is the city of New York. The number of waivers granted to entities ranging from businesses to labor unions, and including the entire state of Maine, recently passed a thousand. Now Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat from New York and a fervent supporter of health care reform, wants a waiver to be granted for the entire city of New York, with a population of over eight million people. That Rep. Weiner wants New York City to be exempt from various provisions of health care reform is understandable, if one thinks like a politician. Weiner would like to become Mayor of New York. Weiner knows, though he would never admit to it, that health care reform is a monster that is unworkable, destructive, and unpopular. So getting a waiver that he thinks is good enough for the rest of the country for the Big Apple is a no-brainer. The one-year anniversary of the law, also known as Obamacare, gave many people an opportunity to take stock at how bad it really is. Some people might think that the number and scope of the waivers proves just how bad the law really is. But one might be forgiven for suspecting the Obama administration believes that the waiver system is a feature and not a bug. The system works thus. Obama has passed a law that will cost people more and degrade the availability and quality of their health care. Then the President can grant waivers to favored people and constituencies getting them out from under the burden. Giving New York City a waiver so that Weiner can become their mayor would seem to be all part of that strategy. news.yahoo.com
