Given enough FREE LAND that they instantly became the LARGEST PRIVATE LANDOWNERS in the entire U.S. of A. they shouldn't have been given the land, but it still would have been built. when the market wants something it will get it unless it is stopped with the power of government. (And then went on to use their monopoly to massively enrich themselves, and received even further subsidies with freight guarantees, etc.) again, i'm against all subsidies, but they would have gotten rich in a totally free market also. their wealth harms nothing unless there is government power to buy.
