4/1/11 Contest Update Chalk up another week of gains, with Bulls managing to find more hand- and foot-holds as they climbed the Wall of Worry. At Friday’s close, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 8.07% YTD (vs. up 3.47% YTD a week ago) and the Contest median was up 6.73% YTD (vs. up 1.23% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 5.15% YTD (vs. up 3.40% YTD a week ago). First place MCBIO’s portfolio (up 32.02% YTD) had another hot week, with ROCKY’s portfolio (up 27.30% YTD) cruising into second place. RRGE’s portfolio (up 20.29% YTD) slipped into the No. 3 slot. At Friday's close, 27 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the black with 17 of the 38 beating the NBI. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week (foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in these two tables). Portfolio adjustments: 1) Thanks to Bob Johnson who discovered quote errors in my spreadsheets. I had somehow been multiplying U.S. quotes by the Canadian dollar in three portfolios (CRAZYP, FIB, FILO). Since the two currencies are pretty much even, the errors were minimal and had no impact on the Contest lead. 2) The CRXL buyout by J&J closed. I used $34.838 as the takeover price (24.75 Euros multiplied by 1.4076) and will reallocate the proceeds using the Friday, 4/1/11, closing prices for the two portfolios that held CRXL (MIKEM & PGO).
