Great post, I saw the article set about Chinese "bamboo" capitalism in Economist print edition and wanted to point to it here, but forgot. It's nice that you did it. It is amazing mix of activity, trust, work, perseverance, ingenuity, but also "grey" area activities like tax evasion, bribery, unofficial connections, etc. IMHO, people who call all Chinese companies frauds don't realize how complex the whole situation is. I am reading through Tim Clissold's "Mr. China" and it also reflects a lot of what Economist said and a lot of what it only alluded to.
