Because ethanol is less energy dense than gasoline ..
More ethanol in the blend = fewer mpg ..

Vehicles are different. Higher compression engines seem to do better with more alcohol in the blend. NASCAR has run a few races with the E10 without any problem. The Indy 500 is now run with pure ethanol.
