It looks like they were only removing certain kinds of poles, the ones that are free standing are fine, the ones that the homeowners had to dig a hole to plant the pole were being removed... it probably has something to do with a city ordinance regarding digging into the public portion of each property near the curb... ranting at the police officer is idiotic, you'll never win and you shouldn't win, that kind of thing needs to be addressed at city hall through proper channels... if that was actually the issue, then I would side with the law, and the police had every legal right to remove those poles... if that was a flag pole and was dug into the ground, it would then become a far more heated issue, but the owner of that pole would still be in the wrong... you could, however, plant a flat pole closer to you house, even a hoop pole planted closer to your house would probably be fine, but close to the curb is probably a violation of some city ordinance since it could interfere with public safety regulations...
