COTS software brings the cost of ownership down somewhat - but perhaps not as much as it should.

On the other hand, some people will save $500 on hardware to bring the cost down to under $1000 and then spend six months tweaking dip switches and poring over manuals bringing the system up - as if the the six months of labor didn't cost anything.

I really didn't consider what you meant by that 'til I ran WinTune to see how many MIP's I get out of this PII/266 under my desk...
Approximately 530 MIPS?!? I am prone to doubt that result, but...

That means a MIP now costs around....$3.60. Compared to $5million, yes, that a "little less." Thanks for pointing that out.
