That's pretty ideological Tim...particularly on subjects of national security levels.

"Ideological" != "not practical", or "has a practical problem in some area". An idea that is ideological is essentially an idea that come from an ideology, it doesn't say anything about the idea being impractical. I understand your trying to suggest that it is impractical, but your words don't actually say that. Ideological also doesn't imply "not very thoughtful", and doesn't automatically imply "not flexible", although in some cases it suggests that.

More importantly it is very practical, we would be much better off if we got rid of almost all subsidies for every industry. Energy is no exception. "Not flexible" in this context would be a blanket rule that nothing, or returning to the point of discussion no method of commercial scale energy production ever get subsidized for any reason under any circumstances. I wouldn't be so inflexible. If there was a good reason to think that a strong benefit would be gained than I could support modest subsidies, but there isn't any such good reason.

n any case you have argued vigorously against subsidies for emerging energy technologies and only offered this introspection when called on it

Not true, I've argued against ALL energy subsidies multiple times, not just here, but on the Politics of Energy thread and elsewhere. That most often expresses itself in opposition to subsidies for alternatives since those are the ones people are posting about and supporting.
