I think its the lousy beliefs they hold that make them depressed.

If you think the freest country in the world is an oppressive power where the masses are ground into the dirt by a rich elite, that there's no hope but revolution, there's no God, that good and evil and free will are just illusions ... the things they are taught to believe are depressing.
