Microsoft has left C++ to twist in the wind and I can tell you that developing Windows software with Microsoft's constantly evolving COM technology is nothing short of painful. Instead of leveraging C++ with well-defined services and components, they build everything around Visual Basic and then cobble together a wrapper so that C++ developers can at least use it. Unfortunately, using their software is such a hellish experience that many switch to Visual Basic and give up the ability to reuse code, coordinate multiple developers, create anything remotely portable, et cetera.
