My initial reaction was to agree with you, but on reflection, some are perhaps individuals who find it intolerable to live as cubicle-dwelling metropolis citizen serfs, so they blot out their existence to a large degree. <The kind of person who can make a living anywhere with a fast internet connection is not the kind of person who is sitting around moping, stoned or drunk, uneducated, unwashed, with no future. Well, that's pretty judgmental of me, and I may be just plain wrong. >

Ted Kaczynski moved from mathematics to Unabombing from outback Montana [though not drunk and dissolute]. He was more of a Luddite favouring old-style life of a temporal nature.

We don't know where we're going, but we're on our way.

am about to take possession of new home office with ultra fast i-net connection and super duper mac pro desktop

i think -

- to be able to make a living by being 'out there' and 'doing something' is commendable

- to be able to make a living by breakfasting in bed, walking along the cliff path, swimming at the beach, lounging in the garden, and generally taking it easy is supreme

- a bit of both is super
