I wonder whose DVD-RAM CUBE will use? Hitachi? Matsushita? Sony? Also, I wonder if CUBE has any deals brewing with the DVD-RAM manufacturers (I would guess "yes"). It sucks being up this early on a Saturday morning -- 6:15 am. You guys are doing good work with the stock price.

Hindery Bullish On OpenCable Boxes: TCI Sees 32% Cash Flow Increase

<Picture><Picture><Picture>

Mark June '98 on your calendars. That's when Leo Hindery says cable ops will see the fruits of the OpenCable initiative, and TCI [TCOMA] expects to deploy the first boxes modeled on OpenCable standards. By the end of this year he plans to unload the 500K boxes currently in inventory as TCI begins marketing digital cable to 65% of its 14.3mln subs. To date, the MSO passes about 1.3mln HH with its digital product. About 525K HH are two-way capable. Questioned Friday about the relatively slow roll-out of cable modems, Hindery says he wants to deliver the "robust" @Home [ATHM] solution on a 2-way plant, and not use "the poor man's excuse" of a telco-return modem. Results were not poor. Revenues for TCI Group increased 4.1%, to $1.618bln for Q3 '97 over the same period last year. Cable operations accounted for $1.61bln of revenues. Operating cash flow increased 32.3%, to $708mln. Total debt was $14.188bln. Free cash flow of $246mln was $100mln higher than Laura Martin of Credit Suisse First Boston predicted. She calls TCI's earnings "fabulous, impressive and awesome." Net customer loss fell to 47K after the op added 30K subs in September. Hindery expects an increase of 60K-75K subs during Q4 and will spend about $25mln-$30mln per quarter for marketing. While eight of the planned '97 partnerships have been announced, another four have been agreed to and six are pending. TCI will shave a year off its three-year capital spending schedule since its debt-to-equity ratio for the quarter decreased to 4.9 from 5.98 at the end of last year.
