Actually, wouldn't that supply of oil to Europe been better protected by keeping Gaddafi in power? By ignoring the treatment of the rebels and maintaining the status quo?

Keeping Gaddafi in place would have kept the oil flowing as normal. Now neither we nor our European allies can be sure what a new Libyan government will do with the former oil contracts, etc.
