Max, What slowdown are you referring to? Today's announcement showed retail sales dropped -0.2% but this included autos. Excluding autos, sales increased +0.4% which is a fairly strong number. Consumer confidence levels were announced today and they were over 106%. The moving 5 month average, I believe, is about 105.5%. The highest number ever is just over 107%. The above numbers certainly don't indicate a slowdown is forthcoming. Spending is up and confidence is high. Seems like things are fairly good. Also just a personal observation, there's no big electronic family gizmo out there this year, like the Nintendo 64 was last year. I'm hoping the lower cost PC's, especially CPQ's, become the product of choice this year either for the first timers or the folks who want two computers in their family. -Keith-

Max,
I am in a financial business that slows down when our clients are doing well. An indication that the economy is doing well. We reengineered our computer system because of the slow down. Several reasons for this.

1. time to do it. 2. money to do it. 3. Process savings off setting expenses. 4. Main frame system needed replacement 5. Software not serving needs 6. Provide mobility to field staff with docking stations.

These are not the classic reasons by the book, but they are a few of the practical reasons. We had to prepare for the future now or be left out of the ball game when our business picks up. Now that the new hardware and software is in place we are discovering how to improve our processes even more.

The point is a slow down might generate even more of this activity to reduce expenses. Althought few companies I know presently run mainframes anymore. There are a number still running 486s with WIN 3.1, and no internet hook up. Of course we are talking slow down here and not melt down. If the economy craters we are all in trouble, and it won't matter what stock we own.
