Kevin,
Re -- I think that the answer is that they're doing it to compete with those 6x86MX and K6 devices that run at 200 mhz or less.

You still think that AMD/cyrix are competition? Get real guy.

If you still own AMD stock, you should be aware that all of the AMD top brass have sold a lot of their stock in the 30's. They made their money. You being a loyal soldier of AMD are left holding the bag.

Kevin - Re: "The cacheless Pentium II is probably cheaper to produce (smaller die size) and it gives Intel the advantage of transitioning the market to its proprietary Slot architecture. "

The rumor is that the L2 cache will be removed from the SEC card - no change will be made to the Pentium II die itself - including its 32K Byte L1 cache.

As for transitioning to the Slot 1 architecture, this is probably the case.

If Intel can offer comparable performance, they will be able to command a premium in pricing vis-a-vis AMD and Cyrix competitive products - and still get a lot of business.

Just look at AMD's and Cyrix's financial statements - they are testaments to Intel's success.
