Korea Electronics Show........................203.228.181.12 10-25-97 : KES Kicks Off Today to Showcase High-Tech Electronics Products By Yu Kun-ha Staff reporter The annual Korea Electronics Show (KES '97) kicks off today at the Korea Exhibition Center (KOEX) in Samsung-dong, southern Seoul. One of the world's five largest electronics trade shows, KES offers visitors a chance to assess nearly all major electronics products developed this year. They will also have the opportunity to figure out the direction that the electronics industry will take in the future. This year's event, which runs five days through Oct. 29, is being held under the theme ''Rich Life with High Technology.'' It will showcase some 90,000 high-tech electronics products submitted by 254 domestic and 166 foreign participants. The foreign companies represent 17 countries, including the United States, Japan, Great Britain, France, Germany, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Organizers of the show expect the attendance of some 4,000 buyers from Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East. They also expect the total value of contract negotiations to reach $1.5 billion. The tone for this year's event will be set by such next-generation multimedia digital products as DVD players for TVs, DVD drives for PCs, large-size TFT-LCDs, hand-held PCs and an array of communication and information devices. Following are some of the major products to be presented by leading domestic electronics companies: _ 30-inch TFT-LCD: This product from Samsung Electronics is the world's largest TFT-LCD to be built on a single glass panel. Samsung's new display device weighs only 4.5kg and has a thickness of 4.5cm, making it ideal for TVs designed to hang on walls or multimedia system monitors. With a resolution of 1,600 by 1,200, the large LCD panel can display clearer pictures than a high-definition TV (HDTV). On the 30-inch panel are a total of 5.76 million densely assembled pixels. Samsung expects its 30-inch LCD technology to reshape the world LCD industry in the years to come, helping it to emerge as a leader. _ Digital TV Super Chips: These chips from LG Electronics are the world's first total solution to the commercial production of low-cost digital TVs. Next year, the company plans to use these chips to turn out 64-inch digital projection TVs costing just $1,000 more than an analog TV of the same size. LGE said it has applied or is preparing to apply for over 600 American, Japanese and European patents on its new digital TV technologies. _ DVD-RAM drive: This product, also from Samsung Electronics, allows users to store or erase data on a digital video disk. It can store up to 5.2 gigabytes of data, an amount equivalent to 3,600 floppy disks. Samsung, which was the first in Korea to develop this sort of drive, said the new product fulfills the same functions as video cassette recorders and CD-ROM drives. It expects demand for DVD-RAM drives to reach 10 million in the early 2000s. _ Hand-held PC: This mobile computing device from LG Electronics is the first of its kind in Korea. Dubbed Mobilian, the product runs on a Korean-language version of Windows CE operating system. Featuring all the capabilities of a notebook PC, this new type of computer represents the opening of a new chapter in business computing. It offers a new means for corporations to improve productivity. _ Card-reading microwave oven: This intelligent microwave oven is from Daewoo Electronics. Designed to cater to European consumers, this new product is capable of reading a card which contains cooking recipes. Daewoo said its new microwave oven is more versatile than existing products, which are only capable of cooking a few kinds of food selected by manufacturers. This new product can cook any kind of food by inserting cards which contain their recipes.
