What we grew up with was the Left taking over in 1932 and changing things ever since. The Right really had no fixed philosophy and was the "me too" party. That is why things seemed much calmer. What the Right did have right could not make it though the small Liberal nozzle that the MSM made available with three network outlets and the press. The Internet has destroyed the Left's monopoly of the media and the rise of a coherent Right wing "Free to Choose" philosophy is now available. Add to that the complete demonstrated failure of the Left's programs, and things have heated up. As to the rest of what you see, it's the normal "creative destruction" of societal change. Early man no doubt complained when his kids set up a home outside of his cave. :>)
