Some people may not know that soybeans are leguminous, which means that their roots acquire nodules filled with bacteria that fix nitrogen that the plant brings down from the air. Nitrogen is one of the main plant nutrients. Phosphorous and Potassium are often combined in fertilizers.

A tree species, red alder, also has nodules that fix nitrogen. If I had a rootrot problem in a stand, I would prescribe red alder to be included in the reforestation mix because it helps suppress rootrots.
