Yes, it was that way, before women went into the workplace with a vengance in the early 70's....the times demanded that families have two incomes....kids, houses, food, insurances, cars, medical bills, college educations, etc etc Taxes were going up at the same time, especially on property.

PLUS, I knew because of my recruiting business, in 1970, the population birth rate was at ZERO Percent....we started not replacing ourselves. We need 2.2 births for every couple. We are slipping, and the Europeans are slipping so low, they are allowing just about everyone into their borders....We can see what that is doing for everyone...

So who was left to care for the elderly, or the ill relatives?

Use to be that the elderly relatives were taken in by their children or other kin. Same with a relative was ill.
