IBM has new read head -- so?
IBM got plenty of headlines this past week about its new read head that can double the capacity of today's disk drives. The firm will start shipping the giant magnetoresistive (GMR) head in December, but don't expect it to have much of an impact on the drive market anytime soon. The storage industry historically is slow to adopt MR innovations, Mark Hachman writes in EBN.
For example, next year just half of all disk-drive makers will have adopted an earlier version of the MR head. And that head is already six years old! The GMR heads are twice as sensitive as the older MR devices, making it possible to pack more information onto a disk surface. "Though it seems like a quantum leap in performance, the fact is that you don't immediately need GMR heads to compete in the disk drive business," says TrendFocus's Mark Geenen.
