liberal historic figure would be a guy named jesus

jesus wouldn't have empowered the state to 'do good' for him. he would have done it himself.

The women of America owe liberals a big thank you for their almost equal rights.

tell that to recovering liberal 'robin of berkley'..

Oh so, the writer Gary Vance doesn't understand what the word Liberal means----the writer has written an opinion that is his alone and skewed to fit the title of the organization,

"Common dreams org"-------sounds like an Obama spin----you leftist just keep reorganizing your selves under different titles.

As a Christian I am appalled that you would use Jesus to pump your political stuff.

Of course, Barrack even rewrote the Sermon on the Mount----or did you forget about that?

Wasn’t Jesus A Liberal?

Liberalism as defined by Webster’s Third New International Dictionary: “a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of man, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for tolerance and freedom for the individual from arbitrary authority in all spheres of life…”

This sounds like the exact opposite definition of democrats and progressives. Democrats/progressives obviously don't believe in the essential goodness of man, otherwise they wouldn't feel the need to force people to give charity (entitlement programs paid for through taxes). The Autonomy of the individual is exactly what the libertarians/tea partiers are all about. Personal responsibility and personal accountability...right up there at the top of the list. And again, personal autonomy is the antithesis of the liberal philosophy. Didn't Obama himself talk about collective salvation? And let's talk arbitrary, The DOJ...black panthers....how's that for arbitrary?

Liberals believe in affordable health care for all U.S. citizens.
I believe in that too. However, I'm not willing to steal from someone else so that I can have cheaper healthcare. Get the government out of the healthcare business and let the free market set the prices. Does it work? Hell yes, look at what has happened to the price of Lasik surgery...Hell, you could be on foodstamps and afford to pay for it.

They also believe in higher taxes for the rich and lower taxes for the middle class and the poor.

I believe in that too...as long as we are saying that everyone is paying the same rate. Why should the tax rates be different? Let's go for the flat tax so that everyone is equal. Otherwise, we are talking arbitrary authority...and we don't like that, right? (see above).

Conservative Republican policies generally favor the wealthy and ignore the needs of the poor.

this country was founded on individual rights without regard to wealth. If you get wealthy, more power to you. But that doesn't obligate you to fork over your hard earned wages because someone else isn't willing to work as hard.

Their policies are so often greed-driven, with no concern for the environmental or societal consequences for their exploitive actions.

eye roll

Jesus plainly taught that the love of money is the root of all evil. So, Christians can go after the various “fruit” of sin in our society, but they won’t see the real change for the better until the axe is laid to the root. Christians should oppose greed-driven policies as a primary point of political concern.

Define Greed. Somebody who is much poorer than you would consider you greedy. Should you have to give up all of your worldly goods until you are as poor as the poorest guy out there, just so you don't meet his definition of "greedy"?

True prophetic vision sees that there is great need for repentance on the left and the right. The effects of powerful lobbyists, special interest groups, greed and corruption abound on both sides of the aisles of Congress. God sees it all and so should Christians. Christian voters need to see that God’s heart breaks over more than just a few political and moral issues. It is time to take off our blinders and mourn for the sorry state of affairs that is American politics.

Amen

Jesus was the ultimate liberal progressive revolutionary of all history.

Horse Pucky!!! Jesus was a libertarian Tea Partier!!
