Credentialism has been a problem for decades. It's not just the economic drive which makes young people think university is better, there is also the snob factor. Being brainy is still considered to be good and having some sort of degree is ipso facto proof of braininess [according to the theory]. Official education doesn't improve the mind any more than other methods of learning and thinking about things.

In fact, to really get educated, it's best to focus on the desired subject and get the available information on that. In a couple of weeks, an intelligent person can catch up to experts [in many fields anyway], who have to know a much wider range of information and also do daily production work such as teaching students.

A decade of medical training for example is ridiculous. A bright 15 year old could be a melanoma expert in weeks if they didn't have to learn how to fix broken bones and the myriad other things that go wrong with people. It's a racket.
