There is an FAA ATC facility near my home and I am friendly with a number of controllers....I don't think that the stress of the job in big cities like Boston, NY, Chicago, LA, etc is a myth. I think it is definitely overblown in more rural areas with smaller less busy airports.......

I heard on FoxNews this morning that the average salary for an Air Traffic Controller is in the vicinity of $160,000. Not bad. I have a buddy who is married to a woman who works at the local airport as an ATC. I think he's buying lunch from now on.
