A Russian friend of my father-in-law's, an exchange professor at his university in eastern Washington, told me that when he came over (I forget the exact year, about 12 years ago I think), bread was $1 a loaf. When he returned to Russia 10 months later, bread was $20 a loaf (equivalent).

He said his wife's pay as a high school physics teacher remain fixed the entire time that rampant retail inflation ravaged their economy. I don't recall what it was, but it was pretty small, maybe $500/mo in US dollars, something like that.

Good times...
