I'm a pilot. During training I used to go up at midnight and practice instrument approaches at a major airport. Basically me in the plane and one controller in the control tower. He probably appreciated the business. From midnight to 6 am... not a lot of traffic. One or two if lucky even at major airports. At lesser airports the tower even shuts down. I can see why someone might fall asleep but it's definitely critical they don't if the tower is open...so they should just shuffle schedules so that doesn't happen...get younger guys, something. 2 controllers is a real waste. It's a stressful job and they are paid well...so you should expect the best performance.
