Sometimes one can win by losing. If Obama had stood his ground and the Republicans refused to extend unemployment benefits in the middle of a recession... well... it would have clipped the right wing just as Newt Gingrich's government shutdown effectively cancelled his Contract With America. Obama's goal was to extend the unemployment benefits, not clip the wings of the GOP as pleasurable as that might have been. Obama puts Americans and America first; his partisanship second.
