Jane, I absolutely agree. I agree beyond what you may have been willing to say. BUT i still think we need to address the issue. 'who' just doesn't make it, neither does 'one'. I want a solid non-gender pronoun that comes out like he or she or him or her. I want to be able to address you with respect without having to identify your gender.---for many this is an important issue.----I may know your gender but in this time-space it is no one's business unless one wishes to have that known.... As a for instance...I get an email from someone who makes it clear who they are...We have become friends and they feel open with me...or by simple observation of the posts...I know more about them then they may have understood they have revealed..... I have become, in either case, a bearer of knowledge that is sacred. I don't feel because I have learned something that I should reveal it....OK, I have, but I believe I have never done so in malice, with the intention of hurting. The point is that I have to scurry around my thoughts looking for these damn words that always tend to reduce my written meanings..... mailperson...who???? ...while I try to protect the identities of people who I know, may know, or have long understood, but all cared for. What I am ranting about is the need for a set of good words that can substitute for 'this person of whom I have great respect'. And the whole slew of pronouns that let me pick and choose as I need all saying the same thing. I've been there. It exists. The people who had nothing to do for 800 years but talk to themselves came up with so many ways of doing it they have a `polite' language which is the realm of the educated....oh how nice. OR...we agree that mailman is non-gender. But we never will because it has 'man' in it. AND there are to many people who don't know what a homonym is. Illiterates run this world...they make us communicate with each other as if we are all simple minded. You have chosen to identify yourself more than others, unless you are a boy named jane. If so we can get Johnny Cash in here to sing a few bars. Other have not. And there are some people who totally get weird when you respond to them on the basis of what they have said. We either need a language that says nothing, a Newspeak, or we need, as you may feel and I do, a language that allows us to live our lives unfettered. Ghunk expressed this better than I have. Well, it's a fine bottle of pinot noir and a salty bowl of edimame. And I'm off to visit the surf I so love and fear. A long short trip back to where I belong. The surf's up, the trades are back. Hey... its that good time again....wear what ever, be what ever, and sink back into that grass and look up at an azure sky, dreaming of whatever makes one happy. Then get eaten by mosquitoes and chewed by ants, and watch your body break out with 12 different kinds of skin strangeness. Pele, god of my world, has banished me from her realms. Maybe this time I can perform ho'o kipu and right whatever wrongs I unknowingly have committed. And finally this may not be the place, but I would like to express my sadness to those of the IPM flag over what appears to be a major down turn in their fortunes. I have gained a few friends in EC's latest war and I gain no pleasure from knowing that someone I respect greatly seems so have been proven correct. Like a good friend of mine said, when a promo tanks we all get hurt. Jane, I enjoy reading your posts. I respect your thoughts which I may or may not agree with. But more importantly there is quality to them that glows. You occasionaly say things that seep deep into my mind in a not unpleasant way. Well, must get packing. regards, mnuench
