Thanks for the notes.

At least from this INVX supporter it looks good that they mentioned RDRT in a positive manner in reference to MR heads. RDRT is one of the 3 main customers of INVX.

Everything that I have read concerning APM has been negative lately. It might be wise to wait a few qtrs and see if APM can successfully ramp-up to MR heads since the dd industry is definitely going (already gone) that direction.

Thanks again for the notes.

Kurt

Thanks for your informative posts, Pierre,

Alleged that industry was broadly cutting back on production. [I questioned him about the need for ALL players to play ball for this to be effective, but his answers were noncomittal....

....She expressed surprise at the oversupply in the current quarter, as the Dec quarter has historically ALWAYS been tight

Curious point. In the last CC, Haggerty noted that he saw some industry reports that indicated that there was a 17% overall reduction in production. Yet, most of the disk drive vendors seem to be adding on capacity. WDC itself is in the process of doubling its Minnesota facilities where the Enterprise Storage Group is located.

Alleged that NEC is cutting back HDD production

This is a surprise given the following press release from IBM and NEC issued on 6/12/97.....

With the agreement, NEC will receive a license from IBM Storage
Systems Division to manufacture specific IBM-developed 3.5-inch high
performance desktop hard disk drives. IBM currently manufactures these drives. With the agreement, both companies will manufacture them. These drives will then be sold by both companies under their respective brand names.

NEC currently makes 3.5-inch hard disk drives at NEC Technologies
Hong Kong Ltd.'s contract manufacturing plant in the Philippines. NEC
will expand this plant to a capacity of five million disk drives per year by Fall of 1998.

NEC will start to manufacture these hard disk drives and is planning to ship them early next year.
